I'm looking for an older truck that will last a long time. When I buy it it will probably already have 150,000 miles on it. All I need is a 5-speed, 4WD, and a 4-banger preferably. I hear Toyota's run forever. I'm going to be taking it on and off road.

What makes you want a four banger??? They are useless for anything other than driving down a paved hill with no potholes and a tailwind

I want good gas mileage. Between eating, keeping my dirtbike running, and gas I'll have about 40 dollars a week leftover. I'm not doing any serious off roading. I'd just like to be able to have some fun in it once in a while.

get toyota and drop in a v8 0r atleast some 5.29 gears if you keep 4 banger. a buddy had a 4runner that had 44 swampers stock axles and 5.29 gears 4banger and a 5 speed and that thing would root beat a many of big v8 trucks at the mud bogs with that thing. know it has a 735horse smallblock 400 and narrowed full size chevy runnin gear and will get nasty in a bog hole

fords have good inline 6 cylinders. my cousin has one (4.9L I6) and it gets 15 mpg. if he would maintain it he could probably get up to 19. or a Ford 4.6L V8 like i have and i get about 16 mpg (with more aggresive driving than most people do hehe). but yeah like chevy sily said 4 bangers aren't that great unless you stay on paved roads.

I get 16.5 with a heavy foot in my truck. I really dont' see any 4 banger advantages unless you pour A TON of money into it

For basic transportation and not trying to break land speed records the Toyota 22RE is your best bet. They are great little motors and get decent mileage. They definitely kick the 4 cylinder Chevy's ass and this is coming from a Chevy guy. I bought a 4 cylinder s-10 for deliveries and kept it about a month. It felt like it was struggling if you had a set of tires in the bed. Now they are JUNK! Mazda made a B2600I truck that impressed me for a 4 cylinder too. They had alot more power than the B2000 or B2200 trucks. If it were me I would look for a deal on a Toyota with the 22RE though! Good luck finding one at a decent price...they seem to hold their value like no other truck out there.

A friend of mine had an 89 toyota with a funky looking sleeper/cab thing, stock, and it had a 22RE with a turbo! Might be something worth looking into.

A little tacoma is most definately the way to go. A buddy of mine has one and he shows up many people in the mud. great gas mileage great life but its hard to find one you can afford if its a toy and your trying to find something cheap.
