View Full Version : Confused about TBS?!

Ok, I finally got a TBS. I got a smooth bore like Smoke20's because I want the gain without the sound. I had a spiral core TBS on my 91' and it sounded cool, but got on my nerves on long trips. So now im confused cause some say it works great, some say it doesn't work at all, some say only spiral works, and others say smooth bore works the best. Can I hear from more of you guys with a TBS on the 99 + Gen III motors? I need more input so I know if I should bolt this thing on or opt for a different one. Thanks!

Hearing it is not the concern here. What you really need to know is whether or not they increase performance. Smoke20 says he lost a full second on his strip times. I'm not sure I believe that but everyone seems to agree that there is a notable increase in power. Most of the people on here seem to have the trans dapt tbs whatever that is. Everyone on here who attests to trying one out say they saw a performance gain so that is what matters. I fully intend to go buy one just as soon as money permits.

Well I just bought a smooth bore one from a nearby machine shop which specializes in racing modifications. It was $40. He said it is identical in quality, and measurments to the trans dapt. The only difference (so he says cause Ive never seen a trans dapt in person) is that it is polished to a mirror finish. I'll be picking it up tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.

Oh and racethisz71, how much of a difference did it make in your truck? Your engine is the most like mine so i'd prob get the same results.

I think this is the one everyone has been talking about. Sorry about the long link...

I don't run on the strip, but I've got the Transdapt smooth bore TBS and when I put it on I noticed better throttle response and it actually added 1-2 mpg for me. But, I've got a different driveline setup than you so I can't promise you you'll get the same pros. I know hunt4game and his 05 5.3 got better response, but I don't think it did anything for his mpgs.

Im sure I'll get something. Those 6.0L are nice. You so much as think about adding a mod and they run better. LOL.

Well I'm gonna order one is soon as I get some more money. After debating about it I almost ordered one today but I stopped myself. Need to wait till I have a little more money.

VERDICT: Well I have an open (fee mod) intake so if I got the torque curve it would bug me after awhile. I'll use the smooth bore and if Im not satisfied I'll wait til I get an intake (Volant) and then get a torque curve TBS.

LOL, if that bugs you don't ever drive a turbocharged sports car i.e. VWs, WRXs, EVOs, DSMs, etc. My Conquest was a spooling, chirping noise box. No cats and mufflers with the exhaust coming out the right side... turbo to straight pipe, LOL! VROOM-SWOOOOSH, *fluttery chirp*, SWOOOOSH *fluttery chirp*, SWOOOOOOOOOOSH *fluttery chirp*, :D Good times!

Well, maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I had a spiral core TBS on my 91 with an open 14" air cleaner and a K&N, it was loud enough to hear over the radio at times. But since my 91' was such a dog you had to give it alot of gas on the highway and therefore heard the TBS all the time. (I drive the highway like 90% of the time).

I really doubt if you will be able to here the tbs that you'll also be able to here it at highway speeds.

Well, I have to say that the increase is true on my 0-60, but I have said many times that my free exhaust slowed me down so this helped get some back It is a true 1.004 second increase believe it or not. Also I have noticed a 1-2 mpg increase if I take it easy, but a 1 mpg decrease if Istay on it. You have to pay to play. Overall I average a 1 mpg increase in this HOT as hell weather (106 today and I am nt taking heat index) and I stay in it alot.

after getting my fuel delivery workin out i think im gonna buy a spiral tbs and put it on next week. how could that 91 be a dog, so things are virtually indestructable.

Well I just found a buyer for my Xbox 360 so I am definitely buying a Trans Dapt spacer Friday! Can't wait to see the difference.

I get my TBS today, by tomorrow it should be on there. I'll let you guys know how it works out. Oh and my 91' was a dog compared to my 99'. My 91' was a 305 TBI with 200hp (max) and I stepped it up to about 230hp with mods but with 3.23 gears and 33" tires, it dogged quite a bit. It did hold up beautifully off-road tho.

oh thats why, those 305s were dogs, my old 92 was just about a dog with the stock 29 in tires on it but it ran strong with no major problems till it had to go to the junk yard.

Yeah, I loved my 91' but my 99' gets better gas milage and has 70+ more HP. The main thing was my 91' was cake to work on.

I got my TBS installed lastnight and I'm happy with it. Not an overwhelming difference in top end but I can pull most hills (which there are alot of big ones around here) without downshifting. That alone will make a difference in gas mileage! It seems to pull alot more and accelerate a little better. I'll let you guys know about towing and actual gas mileage.
