96 GMC 6.5 Diesel-Cracked Block/Broken Crank
Hello,
Newbie to this site and hoping to gain some valuable information. I am looking to buy a 1996 GMC 6.5 diesel with 200Km's on it.
Does anyone know if there is a problem with these trucks having cracked blocks and/or broken cranks?
Have heard this but not sure if it was an isolated incident or if the truck is prone to this.
Would appreciate any and all info.... Do not want to end up with a lemon!
Cheers

6.5`
Their not lemons, I have 260k on mine, however the #8 cylinder has been **** to cracking since 93. There is a heat issue from the turbos exhaust setting next to it. The redesigned the 6.5 to address all of these issue- the P400 and optimizer for hummers. Great engine but $7k-not me.
If its still running at 200k then has been taken care of-what would you expect?

If you buy the truck make sure to inspect the rubber on the harmonic balancer and crank pulley. When the rubber deteriorates it can let the balancer outter halve slip in relation to the inner. The '97/98 model when they first came out with piston oil sprayers had issues with the block cracking or nozzles falling out. Most should have been fixed by now and your '96 should be pre-oilers.
With that said I have seen broken cranks and blocks. A broken crank will crack the main webs but main web cracks won't break the crank.
