Default Looking to buy, so what should I know?

I'm looking to buy a four-cylinder S-10. I've got a very low budget (under 3k) and I'm a student so I need something very reliable and efficient (like with good gas mileage). What should I know? When I get offers, what should I look out for? When I go to check out a truck, what else should I be looking for? Thanks for all replies!

If you can find one with a 6 cylinder in your price range, it'd probably be better just because it is significantly more powerful. idk about the s-10's reliability (kinda researching that myself) but it's a Chevy, so that is either a good or bad thing depending on your point of view.

Make sure you get a trusted mechanic to check out the truck before you buy it.

Hopefully some of the more knowledgeable members chime in here.

Check for leaks and check the hoses and belts.

V-6 more powerful than say a 2.2L ? When it came time to drag the big 78 Bonnieville around so I could jerk the motor and send the rest to the scrapyard it was the 2.2L auto that drug it around to the shop with the rear wheels locked where the car had sat for the last 7 years. One wheel pulls on that truck, passenger side, driver side kicked in once for about ten feet.
