RE: 2004 silverado
The rear brakes the rotors can rot away along with the backing plates so check them. Make sure the e - brakes works well. The shifting (makes sure there are no clunks and slips), see if the transmission fluid is not dark brown and stinky. Make sharp turns and see if the steering wheel clicks or clunks. Engage and disengage the 4wd. Do 4Hi, 4Lo, and Auto4 if equipped. Drive around a little in Auto4 and make sure there are not weird noises or any idiot lights that come on.
Then check the standard stuff you would check. Make sire tires are worn evenly front and back. Make sire the brake pedal feels firm, make sure it idles smoothly and accelerates smoothly. Make sure it tracks straight down the road. Make sure all lights and electronics work. Check the body for rust or bubbles in the paint.
If you want to go into more detail: Jack up the front and shake down the suspension. Make sure the tie rods, ball joints, etc are all tight. Make sure the transfer case and differentials are full and the fluid is ok. See if the balljoint boots are tight or loose. If they are loose and seem empty then the previous owner might not have regualrly greased the font end which could means you will be replacing balljoints and tierod ends some point in the near future.
