Default 4.8L V8 engine reliability

I have a 1998 Sierra with the 350 engine, and considering buying a little newer truck, 2000 Sierra 4X4 with the 4.8L engine. Several people tell me that the 2000 4X4 will get as good as, or better gas mileage than my 98 2X4 model. However, I know nothing about the trucks since the change over in 1999, and I am concerned about the reliability of the smaller 4.8L engine and tranny. I don't pull much, but I stack the miles on, which is why I buy older used trucks. the 98 Sierra is just now broke-in with 160,000 miles on it, but I think the newer truck drives a little better, and may get better mileage, plus the 4x4 which I would like to have, but really don't need. Can I expect 200,000 miles from this 2000 model truck with no major repairs, as I have gotten from my older GMC's. Your experience and thoughts appreciated.

I have a '99 Sierra K1500 with the 4.8L engine. I too drove about 60 miles a day and wanted something with a little better gas mileage. It seems to have less get up and go over the 5.3L engines. I have a neighbor with an '03 and 5.3L to compare to. I like mine. I have not had any major problems with the truck. Just the normal wear and tear. Runs good but I don't know much about the gas mileage comparison. I have 90K on mine and it looks like I could get many more. Go for it!

i have an 01 5.3 liter with 110,000 miles, and i get 20+ miles to the gallon...great truck, taken care of it tho...my dad has a 2000 model silverado 5.3, and it has 156,000 with NO PROBLEMS AT ALL...he still gets upwards of 420 miles to the 26 gallon tank. chevy is built to last, baby!

the 4.8 is a great engine. i have over 240000 on my 2001, yea i drive ALOT. change oil every 3000 mi. i do have some knocking in the morning but then it runs fine. have a 2 wheel sierra with 35" tires on 17" rims and it runs great. a little tired when pulling big hills. ready for a fresher engine to pull boat over hills!
