Question 4wd problem??

First time posting here. I have a 2001 GMC Sierra automatic 4x4 with 51K miles. I get a message on the message center that says "Service 4WD". What is there to service on a 4x4? Will I harm the transmission if I drive the vehicle as is without knowing what the problem is? All fluid levels have been checked. I am a middle aged widow lady and I can't afford to take the vehicle to a shop right now. Any suggestions or advice from anyone who has more mechanical knowledge than I do would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

if you have the electronic shift 4x4 then its most likely the censer, read the owners manual and shift the 4x4 into neutral. if its an on the floor shift i would get it checked out or taken out because that's a little more serious.

Thank you very much GMCfan for your reply. I will have my son check that out and see what happens. I have the electronic shift. Thanks again. Much appreciated for the help.
