Default 4x4 not working

Hey people.
I have a 94 Z71. I had the tranny rebuilt about 3 months ago. Well I just recently tried to use the 4x4 on it and it didnt work. The light did not come on on the floor. I noticed when I was stuck on the ice , the front drive shaft to the axle was moving but the differential wasnt engaging.
So I figured it might be the actuator. How would I go about checking it to see if its working?
Or anythingelse that might cause this to not engage. Thanks any help will be appreciated

first thing is this;.....The front axle actuator is controlled by temperature,it is located on the passenger side (right) axle tube. The solenoid threads into the differential. after engaging electrical current heats the plunger which extends an inch or so. The plunger sllides the shift fork collar which in turn engages your axle. anyways the thing to do here would be replace your actuator, and if that dont work then lemme know, and i'll figure something else out. Be sure that if where you live it is cold outside, that you give 30 to 45 seconds for your transfer case to engage. anyways lemme know if it works or not. good luck
