87 chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 question
When I lock the hubs in abd put the shifter in 4h high or low it makes a popping noise when you are moving. It sounds like it is on the drivers side. Makes the noise every 10 feet or so. But put it in once today and it never made the sound but the next time i put it in it did. Any suggestions? Is my hub bad?

Well I really don't know what to say here. Sorry I don't have any advice for you.
Perhaps the splines on one of your hubs is stripped. Does it make that sound while going around a corner? Does your 4x4 still work with the popping going on? Were you driving it on grippy pavement, snow, grass, mud, where did you notice this?
From what I understand about locking hubs, is that when they're locked, you should not be driving it when you are on pavement that wont allow the wheels to spin independantly, for example, if you were in the snow, and you go around a corner, one wheel will be able to slip.
Can you use the 4x4 with the hubs unlocked? I honestly don't know much about 4x4 or locking hub systems.

No it doesnt make the poppin sound when I go around a corner. Yes the 4x4 still works when the popping noise is occuring. I was driving this on really lose rocks, so it wasnt gripping anything.
No you can not use the 4x4 if the hubs arent locked in.
Thanks for asking them questions maybe it will clear some things up.

Next idea, what happens when you unlock the hubs, use a floor jack to lift up the front diff, and spin the front wheels. Perhaps you have an axle bearing going out.
This for some reason reminded me of my buddy's Ford E250 with bad rear axle bearing that made a sound similar to what you describe.
