Default 87 Chevy Carb question

I have an 87 chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 truck. It had a tbi engine in it at one time. Now it is a 4 barrel carb engine in it. I live in the Hill Country of Texas, so it is pretty rocky and rough.

My question is whatever I start going thru some of the ranch roads the engine will start to cut out and it sounds like it is flooding out. You can press the clutch in and give it some gas and black smoke will come out the exhaust. What can I do to fix this problem, or is that the way it is going to run?

Thanks.

Well your fuel mixtures will have to change based on altitude, if you drive through mountains often. In reality, a modern fuel setup has MAP sensors to help with this, so the ECM/PCM can dynamically adjust your fuel ratio. I'd say put a TBI back in it and see if that helps, but if that's not an option, I would expect that because this is a carburetor, and your fuel ratios are fixed, the truck will just run this way.

Definitely sounds like it's flooding.

How many miles since the engine swap and which carb are you running.? It could be as simple as just getting the carb dialed in.

I didn't do the swap someone else did and I bought the truck from them. I have put 450 miles on it since I have had it. I don't think he put much more than 1,000 miles on it after he made the switch. It has a quadrajet carb on it.

It does great on the highway. It is just it cuts out going thru the pasture every once in a while. I have adjested it some and it is running a little better but not the way i think it should be. How can you tell when it is adjusted right?

Thanks
