Default Aftermarket deck install

I need to replace my factory deck and when I went to buy a new deck, I was told I need a $150 wiring harness for it. I have an '03 Silverado 1500. The person said all GM's made after 2001 need this harness. Is this true or can I use the regular $20 harness like I normally have in the past???? The guy told me the cheaper harness won't work b/c of the ECU memory. Fact or fiction?

I think the cheaper one will work, but you have to find a constant power to retain the memory as I recall. Do you have steering wheel controls? If so and you want to keep them working then you will have to purchase a second wiring harness unless that is the one he is referring too.

Its becuz of the Onstar system installed on GM vehicles. You will need it. No other way around it.

What if you do not have the Onstar in your truck?

even without Blond star you will need the GM-LAN adapter. the stock stereo is integrated with the rest of the car. as well as an 86 k10 i have an 07 Impala same issue, parts of the gauge cluster didn't work without the cd player installed or the GM-LAN adapter. as a test you can remove the cd player and check to make sure everything functions properly. in some 2000 and later GM vehicles the cd player is how you reset the computer when you get the oil changed. some vehicles require the stock cd player to be relocated if removed for this function. just a thought for you
