Default Bearings or cv joint ??????????

My 1998 Z71 is becoming a money pit. The right rear tire was making a high pitched whinning sound on the highway, sound got quieter when I slowed down. Got home, jacked up truck and tire moves in and out about a 1/4 inch. Just in towards the axle and out, so I dont think its ball joints or anything like that. Any ideas? cuz I'm tired of dumping money into this thing, I hate to get rid of it, bodys in great shape.

How deep is the pit? If you keep throwing money into it, it's bound to fill up and be a money pile soon, right?

If your truck is paid for, and my '98 is, even if you drop $1k/year into that thing you're WAY ahead. Trust me, I don't like that every month or 2 I gotta fix something on it, but knowing that I don't have a truck payment on one that's a little bit newer also goes a long way. I say fix it again.

Default bearings

Yeah, I guess your right. I usually do my own work, is this something I can do myself? People I've talked to have said it is most likley the wheel bearings. Any diagrams any where I can download?

www.autozone.com

Go to the site - I think you have to register but it's free - and you can save your vehicle and it gives you decent repair info and diagrams. Not sure if it will cover your particular problem but it might - and of course, it will also give you the price and availability of the parts you're looking for

Take it to a shop for a diagnostic check. The check should be free. My friend had his checked at a trany shop for free. And if it is bearing do both sides. Remember both sides have the same amount of wear. And I feel it is internal with that much slack. Is there slack on both sides of the rear end (I mean will both tires move in and out)? If so, I think it definately would be the internal workings.

I don't think its the bearing. I think its a retainer clip in the differential at best. I hate to say it but it might be the rear axle going bad.
