Build Sheets?

Also, depending on the year, there should be a list of standard and optional equipment codes inside the glove compartment lid. It will give you a code for the equipment and options on your truck. Both my 2000 and my 2008 have them.

There are several "trailer" RPO codes. I think Z82 is one of the basic ones that would mean the truck was built with a "towing" capability. (They usually refer to "trailer" items, not "towing" in the RPO codes.)
Here is a link to RPO code definitions, but it is not specific to a particular year and GM often changes the definitions from year-to-year.
RPO Codes.com- GM option codes,GM rpo codes,Regular Production Options,General Motors options
One thing you could do is take the VIN number to a GM dealer and ask them to print out the RPO codes with definitions. They can do that, if they want to.

Thanks! I am guessing a dealer wouldn't be too thrilled to do me a favor like that if I am buying a truck from a competitor! Just a guess!
It looks like Z82 would be the code I would need. Is there anywhere else these codes would be listed? I saw a 2007 yesterday and opened the glove box and while I wasn't looking for a sticker, the first thing I noticed was the absence of anything...no owners manuel, etc. I really don't think any details of any kind were in that particular glove box.

running your VIN code at a dealership will take them all of about 30 seconds, not a biggie. Just tell them that your thinking about buying it from a friend used, and would like to know beforehand. Any issues, pm me the VIN and I'll have my dealership do it for you (AS LONG AS IT IS A GM TRUCK). It is good thing to have a great relationship with a dealership.
Getting the codes is one thing, but having them all explained is another. The sticker with RPO codes is usually in the glovebox, but it does only have numbers and letters then you still need to "decode" it.
as for Z71 or Z85- they are suspension levels. Z71 is an off road suspension package. Z82 refers to HD trailering equipment.
Also, alot of times, the dealerships take out the owners manuals from the gloveboxes until the sale is made to avoid theft.
Good Luck.
