Default check engine light?

Hi,

Newbie here, I have a 98 chevy silverado, bought it when it had 7k on it, now it has 170k and still running great! Question for you guys, I have been driving my truck with the check engine light on for about the past 3-4 years because both of my cat converters are bad. Is there a way to get the check engine light to come off without replacing the cat converters?? I really dont want to drop $500+ to replace them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in adavance.

nope...

they sell o2 sensor foolers, that trick the pcm into thinking the cats work good......but their success rate is questionable

Find a decent garage that can do exhaust work (well) and buy 2 universal cats, straight-thru design (around $50-$60 each). Makes sure they are the same inlet and outlet as yours and have the garage throw them on. They will cut the old ones out and weld the new ones in. You should be able to pull this off for half of what you would pay for OEM cats put on. Having bad cats can screw up your gas mileage and/or kill your hp. I did this on my 91'.

I have had the same problem. My cats are gone and for about a week after i cut them off my check engine light kept coming on and my MPG would drop dramatically. So...I kept going to Advance Auto Parts every day or two and making them clear the trouble code. My truck kept throwing the same code over and over. The light would go off for a while and then come back on. I went to the exhaust shop and got an O2 Simulator installed. At first it did not work and I was pissed, so I took it back....turns out he didnt ground it correctly. He rewired one wire and i had all the codes cleared one more time. It worked like a charm after that and my MPGs went up to 18-19 hwy.

depending on the model ur MPG may change because of the CEL being on....or not. But i know mine definitely did. When that light comes on my gas mileage and performance goes to ****. I can tell a huge difference. It feels like im pulling a house behind my truck.
