Default clunking in the rear end (fixed)

i have just seen alot of posts on here about that clunking in the rear end which my truck also had. its been doing to for a while so i just went to got new u joints for the rear driveshaft and put them and and fixed it. im not sure which one was bad or if it was a combination of both but it took care of it and im glad it was nothing else. just a little info for anyone that was thinking about trying that first.

Before you changed your rear U-joint was there any slop in it? My truck has the same clunking noise but the u-joints all seem firm. I am confussed by it.

they weren't too bad, i mean we have a nice big shop with a big vise that works as a pretty good press too. and for having slop in them, no they seemed just fine when twisting on them and as we were changing them we we got them off and pulled the caps off they didn't seem all that bad. there were grooves starting to form from the needles and there were still grease in them. as we were doing it i didn't think they would be the problembut sure enough. i think it was $41 for both of them. its pretty cheap and simple thing to try first

The rearward u joint was a pain but I only had to hammer two caps out of the shaft. I imagine doing all four caps with a hammer and some patience would be a nightmare?

I get a klunk when accelerating from a dead stop and from putting it in reverse. Do you think I should replace the other one? Should I try it at home?

You should replace them all at the same time. When I changed mine they were squeeking like crazy. One of the rear bearring caps was rusted dry and pretty much welded the bearrings together. I wouldent recomend procrastinating with that...lol

i would do both of them. another thing why i didn't think it was my u joints cuz they never squeeked at all. mine clunked from accelerating from a stop and coming to a complete stop after the truck settled.
