Default Custom tune, cam, and STS Turbo

Hi all

In between working 16 hour days, I've been tweaking my truck a bit ...I did the air gap mod, the air box mod (eventually I will get either a K&N or a Volant - probably the latter of the two), single-in, dual-out flows ...any everything seems to have made the truck run better ...but I'm really anxious to get the custom tune chip from Wheatley ...that I finally ordered on Friday. I spoke w/ Charlie and he was trying to explain to me where the chip is located and I think that both of our cells were breaking up, so I got a basic idea ....He told me it's next to the power steering fluid res. I'm assuming that it's not the big black fuse box ...

I was talking to him about cams as well ...he suggested a LS6 cam ...I had a cranecam on my old mustang ... Would crane still be the way to go, or is there another recommendation?

I was cruising the web and found links to video's for STS turbo Silverado's ....OMG! Freaky fast! ...What are the long term effects of having turbo? Do parts wear down faster? I do know that one of the long term effects is more tickets. lol

The basic 5-6 lb turbo should not have any ill effect as long as you are very strict on your maintinence schedule. I see you have a Z71, if you do any off road driving you will have to design an intake tube. Their design does not use the stock air box. Whenever you use a forced induction system it is always best to have it tuned by a reputable service shop. You don't want to run lean and burn a piston. STS has 3 options for the 5.3 and they recomend additional parts for the 10 and 16 lb systems. The extra $1100 for the intercooler will help reduce the additional wear and tear.
The truck sts shows on their site has the largest system available.

If you do a lot of towing I'd recommend a supercharger vs the turbo. Turbos make a lot more power than superchargers but if you do a lot of towing, especially heavy stuff, a turbo isn't going to be nearly as good as a supercharger. If you just wanna race the truck then turbo is the way to go.

72charger - I am by no means an expert, but I have never seen a turbo that had anywhere near the power of a supercharger. Especially for towing. The turbos have a lag that takes forever to kick in, whereas the supercharger being belt driven kicks in immediately. If I am wrong please let me know, but from all the research I have done this is what I ahve found.

thats what i have found also the supers end up putting out more power than the turbos end up doing. i wrote a research paper on the comparison of the 2 on trucks not to long ago

LOL, stopspazinout your wrote that backwards I think. Yeah that's what I said, turbos do make a lot more power but for a towing application in order for a turbo to work he would need a smaller turbo that spools quickly with either no lag or next to no lag. If you are racing the thing go turbo I'm not trying to turn anybody away from it. But a supercharger is better for pullingpower.

Oh wait.... I read you guys posts wrong.... der der der again! Yeah a turbo will get way more power out than a supercharger will. Haven't you guys seen any of the newer crap people are doing on drag cars like the twin turbo 500+ci big block Monte Carlo that was in Hot Rod magazine a few years ago? Guy was pushing like 3000HP, serious as a heart attack and not trying to bull crap anyone on here.

that may be so, but look at the heavy modifications and thousands spent for a decent turbo setup. most of the time if you want to get a turbo to match a supercharger its going to require a heavier build up. besides that kind of setup is really hard to run on the street[8D]

In the last couple months "Truckin" mag had a reply to a letter and they said the supercharger put like 40+ more HP to the ground than a turbo, but I know that thats just what I read and not experienced so im sorta clueless. Whenever I start on my old 78 again it will have a smaller supercharger on it like a 144cu" or something like that., nothin to serious.

Turbo = Racing, Highway (higher speed driving). It will work but you will use more gas to haul, tow.
Supercharger = Better for trucks because it has more low end power for towing, hauling, off-road.
