definately helps, and its free. Just be careful with the sensor. A little power increase and slightly better milage. It just helps the air flow smoother and more air can get through.

Your MAF sensor is just outside your airbox. Disconnect the the wires, and unbolt the sensor, then you just use a thin screwdriver to pry up the end of the screen and pull it out. I tried to find a way to remove it without destroying the screen but just mangled it anyway so I wouldn't waste time trying to ease it out. Just be careful of the actual sensors that are on the back side (2 pieces of thin metal that run across the middle) so you do not damage them. Also if you touch the sensors then be sure to wipe them off even if they look clean. The oils from your skin can cause premature failure.

Truth be told. Descreening your maf is not a good idea. I learned the hard way.
The screen works to keep airflow constant and direct air over the sensor. Like the tornado spins the air, the screen condenses the air.
I had to buy a new maf when the guy tuning my impala ss could not get the tune right because the sensor was not reading correctly.
Infact on another occasion a tuner told me he would not bother if my screen on my caddilac fleetwoodwas removed. Luckily I had applied earlier learned lesson and the screen was intact.
So if it is difficult to tune then the stock tune will suffer too. You may not notice it, but there is a reason why it is there.

If you look at all the aftermarket MAF sensors, they all have no screen. So there must be no issue with it. Also it is only there to help keep larger debrie that may have gotten past the air filter if it had a poor seal, which is not a problem with aftermarket filters.

I agree with smoke, I have done this to all of my vehicles and it hasn't affected them negatively.

I've done this mod twice with no ill effects. I'm still running stock air intake, this mod will show it's true potential with an airaid cold air kit or similar. When your done descreening it, nows a good time to use some contact cleaner and a q-tip to very carefully clean the sensors. It's surprising how much dirt collects on them.

I run the Granatelli MAF on my 03 Silverado and it does not show the screen but does come with it, I removed it before installing the $300+ sensor. I have heard of others having problems tunning without the screen but do not have any issues myself, as many of you know I do custom tunning. I highly suggest this mod as it is free and will be one of the most noticeable improvements and as stated by others clean it frequently, I usually do it a week after cleaning and oiling my filter.

Will teh sensor being dirty massively decrease fuel milage? mine recently dropped by 7 mpg after my last oil change. I thought it may be related to the oil change or the weather changes we have been having (88 high, 55 low one day then 52 high, 28 low a week later), but cannot imagine that much of a decrease after an oil change or temp change. It was a pretty drastic dropoff.
