Default Differential Issues

Hey everyone,

I"m new here, and I'm having some issues with my differential. I own a 1993 Chevy K1500 Pickup. I drained the differntial oil, and when I tried to remove the fill plug, it stripped.

So I tried to fill it through the breather, and I put in a quart and only a little bit came through to the spider assembly.

So I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to get that fill plug out. I was thinking maybe drill it?

Also, would anyone happen to know how much oil the rear differential takes?

Thanks for your time,

CB

I assume you didn't strip the threads but the tool attachment point. Drilling and an easyout would be the only way I would know to get it out. You fill it to the bottom of the inspection hole so you can estimate the amount that should take. I don't have the exact amount. Good luck.

Easyout is your best bet. A left-handed drill bit may work too.

Rear Axle Oil
8 1/2 4.2 pt (US)
9 1/2 Diana 9 4/3 & 10 1/2 5.5 pt (US)
Chevrolet 10 1/2 7.2 pt (US)
Rockwell 12 14 pt (US)

If you cant get the plug out look for a aftermarket rear cover with fill hole?

Wow thanks guys. I think I will try the easy out. And thanks so much for the fill amounts. My only other question is could anyone maybe give me an idea of where the inspection hole is? I know each vehicle is different, any help on that is great appreciated.

If you drill it out ya gonna need to drain that fluid again if you get metal shavings in the case. Im sure you know thats obvious but just pointing it out.

Hey guys, I've working on this problem for some time now. I bought an easyout, but it was too small, so after buying a larger one, i have finally gotten the fill plug out. I called a dealship near me and they told me they have a replacement plug there, so I plan on buying that soon. I also plan to drain the old fluid, and clean it all out with brake cleaner. My only question is: Where exactly is the fill line? I want to underfill it.

Thanks.

Fill through that fill hole until it comes out.
