Engine or Exhaust noise

Engine or Exhaust noise
Hi Forum Members,
I have a 2000 Silverado 1500 lowered on a 5" by 7" drop on 22" rims. It is the 5.3L V-8 with the K&N Air Filter Kit, Flowmaster exhaust, still with stock spark plugs, fram oil filter, I have reprogrammed the computer, new Escalade cluster, etc. I recently hit a dead dear on the freeway at about 70 mph and have had a sputtering or puttering noise coming from my engine or exhaust. I can't pinpoint what is causing the noise, but it is definitely not the knocking noise that everyone has complained about. I have that noise too, but only when I initially start my engine and then it goes away. I am going to be changing the oil, oil filter, spark plugs, and cleaning my air filter to see if that eliminates the sputtering noise. I have a feeling that I have a leak in my exhaust from my truck being to low and may have caused damage to the exhaust prior to the cats. I am wondering if anyone has experienced this issue and if my worse fear has come true from reading these posts and that it is damage caused by the engine knocking. If anyone can help me out, I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Kevin

RE: Engine or Exhaust noise
Chevy 112488,
The noise increases as I press on the gas and when I am traveling at high speeds. I'm sure it is still there while idling or while not pressing on the gas, but the noise can be heard as I accelerate. This is what leads me to think it might be an exhaust problem. It also is very consistent as you said, like a putt, putt noise but it is continuous in nature. My brother even commented on the fact that it sounds like I have a putt, putt mobile. I think my only choise is to take it to a mechanic and have him look at it, I don't really trust Chevy dealerships. I just bought a new filter, oil, and spark plugs today and plan on doing all three things tomorrow to see if that helps. However, I still think it is the exhaust.
