Exhaust advise
Hey Guys,
I just bought a 2003 extended cab 1500 Silverado Z71 with 4.8L.
My wish list for this truck is extensive, but my first investment is going to be exhaust. I am pretty set on flowmaster, but I have 2 options, and I'm getting 2 different stories.
Option A: 1-in-2-out flowmaster muffler, w/2 tail pipes. This obviously is less expensive.
Option B: True Duals (flowmasters, of course). This is a little more expensive, but worth it, so I thought.
One muffler guy is telling me that True duals won't sound right on the '03 4.8L, due to the firing order, or something like that. Have any of you ever heard anything like that? Which of my 2 options would you suggest? And Why?
This is my first post here, though I've been lurking for a while. Thanks in advance for any advise.
My Truck: '03 ext cob 1500 Silverado Z71, Nerf bars, bed caps, UWS toolbox, Definity Dakota A/T 285 75/16
My wish list: Flowmaster exhaust, K&N CAI, Helix Power Tower plus TBS, Diablosport Predator, Spray-on bedliner, remote starter, 4" lift/level

RE: Exhaust advise
im not sure what firing order would have to do with it, but i know ever since i joined this forum people with 4.8 and 5.3 and true duals have said they lost low end power doing it... i have single in dual out and i didn't notice any lowend drop, and i picked up some high end... i cant personally speak for whether true duals would make you lose some torque but thats just what ive been told... but i doubt firing order has anything to do with it.

RE: Exhaust advise
I was wandering what firing order had to do with it, myself. So I figured I'd ask here. I'm no mechanic, just like to tinker, so I thought you guys may have some insight for me. It's good to know that the true duals would make me lose low end power. I don't want that. I'll probably go with single in dual out, unless anyone else chimes in and changes my mind. Probably gonna get the new exhaust in a couple of weeks.
Hopefully next month I'll be able to add a CAI! That's gonna be another tough decision. K&N was my original plan, then I found AirAid. But what worries me about both of them is that the top is not sealed, which will allow the HOT engine compartment air into the filter, defeating the purpose of CAI in the first place(in my humble opinion). I just discovered the Volant CAI today, which appears to have a sealed box, but I've never heard of Volant, and unsure about the quality.
GGRRRRR!!! decisions, decisions, decisions!!!

two guys on here (not sure if either of them still post i haven't been around for a while myself) have volant systems, and they were pleased... the sealed box idea seems like a good idea... or you could look into the ultimate free hp mod list... i did the redneck air box mod and an airaid modular intake tube and its basically the same as a cold air intake...

RE: Exhaust advise
If you run true duals and aren't making very much power, there's the possibility of the exhaust gasses slowing down. When they slow down they cool down. When they cool down it causes unwanted back pressure which effects performance. Keep it a single pipe set up and get a Borla or Magnaflow on there (IMO).

The Yankee is from ls1trucks.com and drives a built chevy himself as you can see so if you are looking for any serious technical advise ask him for sure.
In my opinion Flowmaster is the best muffler because itnearly the most aggressive muffler I've ever heardand is affordable. I own an 03 Sierra with the 4.8 and I use to tow with my truck every day. I can tell you for a fact you will lose atleast a little bit of torque but not much. I ran my duals out the right side in front of the back right tire at an angle like the Ford Lightning and it sounds completely different from most chevy's but you lose even more torque this way. So I definately recommend a single in/ dual out flowmaster and I recommend running them all they way out the back like normal.
Also, I don't know how loud your looking for it to be, but I have the Flowmaster 40 on mine which is the second loudest and now I wish I had the new Super 44 which just came out. So if you want it to sound awesome and you don't wanna be sorry later on down the road, I'd get the new 44. If you don't want it over the top loudI'd get the 50. From what I've heard the 50 still sounds really good but isn't over the top.
(wow I'm writing a book here) Also, I don't know if you checked out the Silverado FAQ's, but there are directions in there for turning your stock air box into a ram air intake with the help of a factory replacement K&N air filter and a saw. Check out the Ultimate Free Mods list.
