Default Klunking

Hi has anyone experienced klunking when stopping or when pulling away from a stop?

A drivetrain clunk that kinda sounds more like a metallicy "clank" or kind of a stumble/lurch from the brakes? My brakes do that but I took them apart and couldn't find anything wrong.

If it's the first it's a problem with the U-joints people have been having.

its a 2005 z71, just turned over 67000 kms, runs well, never thought the u-joints would go this early.

The most rearward U-Joint always goes pretty fast. Mine was out at 70,000

Should be the slip-yoke on the 99-06 GM trucks.
hell I hope its not the U-joint. Mine does it all the time. especially if you let it roll back a bit and gas it.

does the U-joint just abruptly snap?

I think most shops don't charge much at all to do a u-joint replacement. Might just drop it off at a tune-up shop one morning and get them to do it for you.

The U joints aren't that difficult to replace. Try doing it yourself. Unbolt the rearmost u joint from the driveshaft, slide it to the side and carefully pull it out of the transfercase. Use a flathead screwdriver to pull the clips out of the two ends of the u joint. Find a socket or something to use to hammer the caps out of the loops. You kinda have to push it through all the way to one side and pull the caps off. This may take some time and effort to get it all the way out. Then pull all the caps off of the new one, grease them a little if they need it and fit the main piece in the shaft. Then sort of tap the caps through from the outside of the loops until the new one is seated correctly. I had to use my old caps because the new ones were too tight, but they were in pretty good shape. I just cleaned them out and put the new roller bearings in them. Once you get it situated, put the clips back in with a pair of pliers. Throw a glob of grease inside the slip yoke and put her back together. Took me roughly 45 minutes but most of that time was spent hammering the caps in and out of those damn loops. This should solve your problem.

FYI: No they do not just fail. They gradually wear out and then can break once they are worn to a certain point. Lack of grease and an overabundance of dirt will usually kill them and in some cases cause a clunk or vibration when they start to go.

My rear u-joint does not seem to have any slop in it. I was wondering it it would clunk even if it was solid?

YEP! i just did mine cuz i had the same problem. no slop but the klunk. even when i had it out i didn't think it would be the problem but sure enough when i got it back together it was it. i replaced both u joints on the rear shaft to be make sure. not sure which one it was or a combination of both of them.
