Reminds me of an old Custom Classic my father had. He would turn the top of the air filter cover over and screw it down. With it upside down, it didn't pull air from the air channel, but instead from all around (and through) the filter. Couldn't ask for a more direct route.
Plus there was enough room inside the engine compartment you could climb inside to work on the engine. Plenty of room to pull cool air.

Hey MrLM7, what if you were to route the tubes down where the stock box sits, behind the lights, then up in front of the grill. Then you get cold air from the front of the truck without having to leave your headlight out. There is a ton of room between the grill and radiator. I may be interested in doing this as well since it is similar to my last plan, so lets play with some ideas on this. I thought about putting a ram air setup here and routing it to the bottom of my air box.
