Hello all! I just found your forum the other night and think its great! I have a 2001 Silverado LT Ext Cab with 5.3L engine and am now just over 100K on it. I was thinking it may be beneficial to switch over to Synthetic oil and wanted to get you opinions.

 

I don't see any great benefits to synthetic..its all "oil" anyway...its not some witches brew...it just has long life additives and such in it..

if you change your oil at 3k...it really doesn't matter WHICH oil ya use.

 

I'm running AMSOIL in mine. I'm not debating Argon - just throwing in my two cents. They've done some pretty rigorous testing and have comparisons with other oils on their site showing the differences in protection when it comes to wear etc. If you're not doing anything performance-wise, you'll probably be just fine with regular oil. If you plan on doing and performance modifications, you might want to consider a synthetic. Then again Argon has been a GM Tech for 20 years, so I'm sure he knows his stuff.

 

Thank you for your replies! I do use my truck for work so I have been putting on alot of miles since I started my new job. If that should make any difference at all.

 

the main thing is to change it...screw the damned oil life lite...it has no clue how dilluted the oil is with gas deposits,etc

 

Ditto. That light is only there so the soccer moms with the Tahoes and Suburbans don't go thirty thousand miles without an oil change....

synthetic oil will make your engine run a little cooler, but i agree that as long as you change every 3000 reg oil will do you just fine.
