New Guy...interested in a Silverado

My .02...Diesels are great, but the extra cost is only worth it if you either tow a big trailer or drive A LOT of miles. I was in the landscape/handyman business for a while and went through a few trucks. My favorite truck and the one I kept the logest was a 2001 GMC 2500HD 4X4 with a 6.0 motor. It pulled my 14 foot enclosed trailer very easily and hauled more landscape blocks (HEAVY) than I care to remember. I bought it with 150,000 miles for $3500 back before the cash for clunkers drove the prices up so high on used trucks. I sold it with 225,000 and it was running as good as the day I bought it. I sold it after the price hike for $4500 thinking I was doing good. The same truck is bringing 5 - 6K in the condition this truck was in which was excellent for the miles. So long story short I would highly recomend the HD trucks with the 6.0. You should be able to find a decent one for 6K or under.

Well, I don't know how pertinent it is, but I just traded in our 2006 GMC Duramax today on a 2011 Ford F-350 6.7 Powerstroke.
The Duramax had 100,000 on it, and when the dealer came back and told me he could give me $19,500. I told him that was absolutely insulting and got up to leave. Negotiations resumed and he ended up giving $26k for it. I betcha it'll be on the dealer lot on Monday for $32k.
I was told by my father to take the truck down and he'd sign papers if I could get himunder 3% financing and owe less than $30k for a new one. It took some work, but Mom now has herself a new truck!
(Oh, you might want to take a look at Ford's older 7.3 diesel, but stay away from the 6.0 and 6.4)

Believe it or not, I rode in a 1995 F-350 7.3L diesel yesterday...completely unplanned. That truck felt great. Told the guy I'd be interested in it if he ever considered selling it - it had the tranny replaced 4000 miles ago, and when he got it, the mileage was stuck at 140,000...so there's probably at least 200,000+ on it. It's pretty beat up, but it runs good.

So right now I'm looking at older Cummins, Ford's 7.3L Powerstroke and the Chevy HD's with the 6.0. Which one comes out on top, if I'm looking for an older one for under about $5000?

For under $5000 you might be hard pressed to find a Chevy and if you find a Powerstroke in good condition I would be absolutely shocked. I'm not sure on the cummins though, I know nothing about Dodges.
Have you looked into a mid-90's big block from General Motors or Ford? The 454 and 460 were both huge powerhouses and aren't too hard to come by... Fuel efficiency might be an issue though

Haven't looked at the big blocks, but I will now. Thanks again to everyone here for the advice.

You could probably find a base 1999 or 2000 2500 6.0 liter work truck for around that price. The mileage didn't bother me, but all my jobs were in a 40 mile radius with many being closer than that. Search eBay for 2500 or 2500HD and you will see a few higher mileage work trucks in that range. Good luck!

Dont wal but RUN from a 6.5 diesel. Been on the auto industry for 22 years. I just traded my 2007 King Ranch cc 4x4 with 35.s for another Chevy, I could make it to my camp in my 2006 Chevy in 2wd witha power programer 6 inch lift duals with 35 inch cooper sst.s, the King Ranch had the dsame set up and always had to put her in 4wd to make it. My Wifes H2 wwould make it in 2wd wirh 37s and her driving. Never will I have another ford.
