Unhappy Not What I Expected

Last weekend at just over 19K miles, I swapped out the OEM air filter for a K&N. According to the onboard computer, my average fuel ecomomy went from 16.2 DOWN to 15.0, roughly an 8% DECREASE! Also, I didn't notice any improvement in the "giddy-up and go" aspect either. Seems like a total waste of 55 bucks.

Thoughts anyone???

i did the same thing to my truck and it didn't do a whole lot. i did get better fuel economy though. thats really odd how it didn't improve your fuel economy

Were you driving the truck a little harder trying to feel any gain in HP you were looking for from the K&N? That would make you MPG go down. Kinda like how most people will complain about aftermarket exhausts making the MPG worse but not stop and think about all the times the hit the skinny pedal a little harder because they like the new sound there ride makes.

yup ...that was my experience also.... don't understand it either. i've used k&n products for yr's and i mean i've always had a increase in milage, but not this time . i pickedup a 06 gmc reg.cab 5.3 nothing fancy at all . i put in the k&n and figured i get possibly 1-1.5 increase ...nope not this time i actually lost 1.2 mpg ..... so i put the stock filter back in and got my 1.2 back. will call k&n a see what's up , they have always been helpful before , we'll see . i'll post back after i talk to someone.

Dry high flow air filters work better on these trucks than oiled filters.

Good to have ya!! Yeah AEM has that filter. I have a Spectre set up on mine that I got from Autozone off the shelf for $149. I cleaned it and just didnt add the oil. Seems to work just fine like that. That oil will eventually get onto the MAF sensor and containminate it causing the sensor to give the computer false readings. In turn it will give poor gas mileage, run a little rough, even shift sluggishly.

afternoon

i ordered the AEM , but i got to thing about the Mass air sensor and did somemore reading and talked to a few other people and they agreed with waht u had to say about the oiled filter's and it messing with the sensor.
all the other vehicals where carb models , so , i'm going to go to napa and see if they carry the OEM part for GM and go from there . i'll get back when i get the new parts on and do some testing.

thanx for all the help
