RE: ouch....
I have almost 168k miles on my 99 4l60E and Ive been lucky because been stickin to the lucas stop slip. Ive been wondering myself if I could get my tranny rebuilt with one of these kits on this site http://700r4l60e.com/store/home.php?cat=58 and theres this site's kit http://www.jsrautospecialties.com/4lhipemareki.html.
Maybe you could get your tranny rebuilt with one of those kits if it would be too expensive from the dealer depending I guess...

RE: ouch....
Mine is at 68K. I put lucas in it in a last ditch effort to get it to stay together long enough to get home, it didn't help then... Warranty Co. is going to cover the first $1700.00, by the time GM gets done with me I'm probably gonna have to shell out a grand or so... Warranty Co. is making them break apart the tranny in hopes of repairing it, but GM already had told me that they would just replace it because they already know that it is junk. Before their labor to diagnose the problem, I was already lookin' at $800 difference for the new tranny. I think my next investment will be in a tranny kit...

RE: ouch....
a little off topic...
My truck is at 65,000 miles. I have no clue if the tranny has ever been flushed. Im thinking about flushing it and then running Royal Purple ATF...if they even make that. Also want new fluid in diff. and transfer case. Is it worth it to run Royal Purple fluids in the tranny, differential and transfer case? or would GM's fluids be better?

RE: ouch....
Got my HOTROD back, finally...[:'(]extended warrantyand $800 later. Finally get to park the Ford, again..
As luck would have it, two days before I got my truck back....my Borther-in-law lost the tranny in his 2001, Z-71.[:@]He was headed home from our hunting trip, pulling a 5th wheel camper and lost tranny about 20 miles from where I lost mine... Exact same thing happened to it, but it has alot higher miles and has been used for pulling ALOT.
He talked to a few in the tranny industry who told him to ditch the POS 4L60E setup and convert it to a 4L65E. He is going to tacklethe rebuild/conversionhimself and will probably end up with about the same money in it as I just spent. I think I'll be his apprentice, and figure out how to do the conversion so I can upgrade my own tranny later on.[sm=wootwoot.gif]

RE: ouch....
You might just be better off taking it to an actual transmission shop and having them rebuild/supe it up. All the shops in my town were quoting me between $1,500-$1,800 and that was completely suped up. A little more than $800 but you know for sure then that it will be able to handle you beating the crap out of it.

RE: ouch....
Also, I forgot to say, we are pretty lucky our transmissions don't fail more often. I work at the Dodge dealership and there is an old guy that works in there that does nothing but transmission jobs a.k.a rebuilding and replacing junk Mopar trannies every day all day long.

RE: ouch....
I hate to say this but all American trannies are junk unless they are Allison or a 5-6 speed (or aftermarket performance). Only reason I say this is cause my mother had a 4Runner with and auto and it was never flushed and the filter was never changed. It clunked and slipped like hell before she got rid of it but it had 230,000 miles on it and was still driveable. If my tranny goes out Im gonna do my damnedest to try and fit a 5 speed under it.
