Painting issue
It has been a long time since I,ve done any body work but I wanted a second opinion.
I painted the chrome backing of my mirrors to match the color of my truck. I did this because road salt in the winters have taken the chrome finish almost completely off! I sanded them down, use self-etching primer, let it sit for a few hours and then sanded and painted the mirrors to match. (I used the correct color Im 100% sure). Well apparently this morning after curing, they were hazy and looked like crap. My neighbor said we had a really humid night lastnight. Could that be the case? Humidity killed the finish? Or did it have something to do with the self etching primer?
Oh and can you remove light overspray with a clay bar? (The overspray comes off with my thumbnail).

RE: Painting issue
When I painted some wheels for my car, they sat outside after they cured for a few daysand it rained one night. Where the water collected, they were cloudy, faded. I thought they were ruined. It cleared up after gently wiping, blotting the water off. Your mirrors may do that??? Wait till they dry up to see what happens. I would guess, worst case, you may have to lightly sand and re-paint. I suggest if you do, take them off the truck and paint somewhere dry, then let them cure for a few days at least. I know that may make it difficult for using your truck but.......

Yeah, Im hoping thats all it is. It was humid enough lastnight that my hood and roof was wet. I'll prob just take them off and do it again. I can't really run it without the mirrors unless I figure out how to remove the backing plate (chome part I painted over). Thats prob my best bet. Thanks wannarex!

RE: Painting issue
When I did my wheels I found out it took about a week for the paint to cure. Of course that was 4-5 coats of paint and 3-4 coats of clear. Let us know towards the end of the day if it dries out and they clear up.

Ok I will. Any idea on if I can remove the plastic piece on the back without removing the entire mirror? If I can just get the back piece off without the whole mirror I can let it sit for days without worry. Im afraid to pry too hard on them (GM plastic has always been kinda brittle).

RE: Painting issue
i believe that that is a little piece that sets in with double sided tape. you could pull the door panel off and unbolt the mirrors yes its a pain in the *** to drive with no mirrors. im really surprised with all the painting problems in here. i repainted my hood and had no such problems it was dried and cured within an hour or so.

It must be where I live then, cause I've had similar problems before. Gotta love PA, the humidity can triple in an hour. I finally got it done lastnight. I sanded them down a little (on the truck) and recoated them with paint, then 3 coats of clear. After it sets, I'm going to buff them out a little. They turned out pretty good though.
