Cubpak89, they sell R134 retrofit kits that work well. I've done a couple with no problems and did not have to buy any extra parts. It's been a few years, but the kits were available at Wallyworld. Something like this:

R12 to R134a "drop-in Kits" are available at local auto parts, full kit consists of PAC oil for compressor , Freon, and adaptors for high and low side access ports. sticker to apply to evaporator box with info required by some/most states. most all require a certified ACCA Tech to do the retro fit.

They may be able to give you some pointers and I understand they have some loaner tools to do the job right.
In reading up a little on this, I found that it is more complicated than I knew it was when I did it (with no problems). Sometimes ignorance can be helpful.
Anyway, seems like it might be a good idea to wait for your dad to give you a hand. Having someone who knows what they are doing and will share their knowledge with you is a very good thing! Who knows, you might have to do this again at some point down the road!

It cannot be made anymore, you can definitely use it still. If it were me, I'd go wit the R134a rout just because if ... something happens and all that refrigerant spills out, you wont be crying if it does. R134A is way cheaper ...
