Not to offend anyone here by this, but i just did a ghetto setup for my ram air. I bought a 10 dollar piece of flex pipe for your downspouts, and clamped it onto the lip of my volant box. Then ran it down to where my fog lights would be and angled it facing out. Took me about 20 minutes to do, ill try and get some pics of it for 2morrow.

 

Popo did one not to long ago but I dont know what happen. He made his own box kind of but out of drain pipe looked real cool. If you can record any gains you know mpg's, throttle response, and added power.

 

Ya i saw what popo did a little while back, i already had the volant box so i just needed to find some kinda flexable pipe to run down from it. I didnt notice much for low end, but once you get cruisin it seems to get up n go a bit faster, as for MPG im really not sure.

 

Does that airbox only have one inlet on the bottom?

 

Ya the volant has a 3.5 in. hole in the bottom of the box and then the side on the fender is open so there is another little opening there.

 

Ok in that case try closing up the opening on the side. It sounds weird I know, but in order to get the Ram Air Effect you need to build pressure up in the air box. You are probably getting alot of air from the duct, but your loosing the pressure inside the box because it is simply blowing out the side of the box. So the air comes in and back out agian instead of pushing through the filter. It is just an elaborate cold air box as it sits now. Thats why the whole Volant Ram Air system confuses me. How could it be ram air with a giant hole in the side of the box? You need air pressure, you need to force the air into the intake, hence "Ram Air". The only thing I can see for not sealing the box is the problem with low rpms. My Nissan had a Ram Air setup on it and the MAF didn't like it. It would stall out at highway speeds unless you kept the pedal pressed down (no idle or anything below 1000 rpms on the highway).

Just a thought:
I would use a big piece of rubber or something on the side of the box and mount it in such a way that it would allow air to blow out of the box if it builds up too much, but not any other time. Like a blow off valve for your air box. It would be a bitch to perfect it but it would be cool as hell. Just think, at low rpms the air pressure builds as the engine doesn't pull too much of it in, so the rubber moves open a little to let the air out. Now you smack the gas, pressure drops in the box, rubber seals against the opening edge, now all the air coming in the bottom duct will go directly to the intake. I should draw this all up!

 

Ya true i didnt think of that, ill try the rubber piece on the side.

 

update for mine in this post. I oook it all out to really see if there was a measurable gain. As for mpgs i don't have exact numbers but i guesstimate approx 3 mpgs! i know it sounds like BS but, i ran the same half tank to 1/4 tank with the ram air and with out and there was a significant gain running with it. top end is very noticable as well. I too had the open end with about a 1/4 inch gap all the way around the filter. i sealed it up tonight and will be going on a trip tommorrow. this should create a much better ram air effect. i will report back.

 

Thats it im going for it but im going to fab my own box. I dont want to use flex tube but i might have to.

 

it's the easiest and the cheapest! I eventually plan on gettting the muffler shop to bend me a pipe but that is a far back burner project.
