Default Rear brakes

Hey how would I go about converting my rear brakes from drum brakes to disc brakes? Is there any conversion kits or do I have to buy and entire rear axle? Thanks

There are conversion kits, but it depends on the year of your truck. Let us know what year your truck is and I'll see if I can help you further. I looked online and most of the conversion kits are for 70 and 80 models. Good luck bro!

The other issue I have heard of is that with the weight of these trucks, the rotors go bad quickly. I know nissan uses this on their trucks and they wear out fast.

If it were me, I would keep the drums. Drums actually work very well. Like smoke stated, the weight could potentially cause you some issues. Good luck in whatever you do!

You could do a 14 bolt corperate axle from a 2500HD, it has 2 calipers on each side and thick-*** rotors.

Well Im looking at starting to make my truck a racer this summer and was trying to get some ideas about braking and suspension. I know the trucks are light in the rear so kind of wanted to remedy that problem too for better traction. Even though Im turning it into a racer you still think I should leave the drums? I have 18" rims with fairly good size tires so I figured the discs in the back would take the load off the front. Let me know what you guys think!

Oh and by the way, its a 1997 C1500. Probably going to rebuild from the bottom up.

I think leaving your rear drums will be just fine. It would save you a lot of money to put into performance mods as well. Let us know you progress and your times when you go bro!

Will do! Keep looking for posts from me from now on and throughout the summer. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions!

Sounds good man! I'm going to be running this summer also. I also want to get my truck dynoed so I can see what I'm producing. I hope I can get in the 14's like MrLM7, but we'll see!
