service 4wd light

RE: service 4wd light
If you have push button 4 wheel drive it is most likely the (4 wheel drive) solenoid that is going bad. It's the unit that engages the 4-wheel drive. It's a $180-$200 part from GM. If you can do it yourself you'll save a ton on labor.

In my '01 it would occasionally come on after startup and go right back out. I never had a problem with the 4wd. If it's throwing a code you should be able to get it read at your local Autozone/Advance to find out what it is.

RE: service 4wd light
On my 2000 when i bought it the light would come on but the 4 wheel drive worked fine. It was the switch in the dash the chevy dealer was able to read a code on it and then they replaced the switch and the light never came back on. So i would see if there are codes like cracker said.

RE: service 4wd light
mine showed the same code intermittently for a while. By the time I got to the dealership it would go away, but when it was there,I could not select 4wd. One time it even made the truck drive like it had no power and shifted really hard. It ended up being the encoder motor. Don't know what it costs though, under warantee at the time. Happened more this time or year on moist mornings.
