Default shift linkage question

Have an 02 sierra 4wd, Can anyone tell me how the (forgive the wording, I dont know what it's called)shift rod is supposed to connect to shift linkage, Mine came off when going from drive to reverse. So I crawled under the vehicle and basically put the short metal stud from the end of the shift rod back in the hole of the other part that goes to the tranny. Since it's Sunday and no shops are open I have it temp. fixed with a tiewrap. I cant tell if it connects with a "C" type clip or a nut, but at least I can now go from drive to park, rev etc... Again, I appologize for probably butchering the terms and hope this makes some sense to you folks. Thanks for your time
