Suspension Hop on interstate
Can anyone help me with a suspension issue? I've got a 2003 Chevy Silverado 1/2 ton extra cab 4x4 that bounces on the interstate, but only on the highway that is poured with concrete? On the asphalt part, it is fine? It seems the concrete areas have some wavyness to them and the truck bounces?
I'm going to try some heavier duty shocks on the front and see if that helps. Hopefully that solves the problem!
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks

RE: Suspension Hop on interstate
hello,
I have been wondering why my truck does that bouncing on the highway too?
My last truck was a 2003 GMC 2500HD D-Max Crew. it did the bouncing thing on the highway. I sold that truck and went to the same thing but extended cab. Again, with the bouncing.
I asked my buddy with a 2001 Chev 1500HD crew and his does it as well.
I was under the impressiont hat it had to do with the legnth of the truck. Guess not since my crew and my extended both do it. I then thought it was a 2500HD thing, but my buddies 1500HD does it? I now have no idea why the problem exists. I understand the joints on the highway are a cause, but why doesn't the legnth of the truck change anything?
Are there any other answers besides the rs9000 shocks?
thanks!!

Stiffer front shocks will not help at all. The cause is the unsprung weight of the leafspring suspension. Trucks are intended to be workhorses so that's why they will ride better with a little weight in the bed. A couple guys I know that have the 2500/2500HD have found smoother rides with the 1500 leafsprings, but have sacrificed load capacity. I've found that the 1500HD rides the worst since it has 3/4 ton suspension wth basically the 1/2 ton frame. There was a company that made the Velvet Ride shackle that helped with the bounce but I believe they went out of business. Some shops may have some or know where to find them. An adjustable shock like the RS9000 will help some, but it won't give you a Cadillac ride.

I have a 99 Silverado 155 extended cab. I have had the same issue. However, I notice that after I changed out my tires and went to the 265 X 70 R16. it is much less noticeable. Now I drive that stretch of road a LOT, and I can really tell the difference.
So if you have the smaller 255 or less tires on it, I would think about tires.
