Hello Folks,
I'm new to the forum and since I'm sure there are tons of people out there who might have encountered my fitment question, I thought this might be a good place to ask it. I have a stock 2001 GMC Sierra 1500 4WD (Z71 package). I have always wore the stock size wheels and tires (out of economic necessity...haha) I want to put some 20" wheels but don't want to get into an overhaul of the front end to do so. I am aware of the tosion key leveling kits, but will they affect my ride and/or the wear of my front end parts,...ball joints etc...I want to run 275 60 20's ...about 33" in diam. I'm sure I can't wear these stock???? What's the biggest I can wear stock???? Anybody had the torsion key setup for a LONGER period of time without problems?? Will this kit enable me to level and wear this tire or any bigger???? I appreciate the help..dont want my first set ever of custom wheels to be a bad experience

Crickets Chirping
I must have accidently posted this in a ford forum...since IMAGMMAN...cause 28 people looked and to this point no one ever tried the level by re-indexed keys method on the front of their truck....(crickets chirping).....I guess at best it's a gamble ..i guess I'll go to a suspension/alighnment shop and ask their opinion...hope there are no pesky singing crickets there (chirp...chirp...chirp..)
Also as a sidenote to any who would offer it as advice....I tried searching the FAQ and couldnt get a match for several things including the word truck...could be a cricket stuck in my mouse....

Here's a guy running 295's with a leveling kit. If you do it, take pics & post them here. I will be upsizing too in about 8K miles.

you might be able to fit those tires on there with the stock suspension but it all depends on what the offset of the wheels you get are. i've seen a stock 2wd chevy with 275 55 20's rub the plastics cause it had a nasty negative offset. just got to a local tire shop pic out the wheels you want and then choose a tire not the other way. if you want a mild all terrain tire i would recommend the cooper ltz or the new bfg rugged terrain or something like that. (not rugged trail) we just got some in at my work like 2 weeks ago but have not sold them yet, they look decent but not sure on the wear.

I believe that on stock wheels you can run a 33" tire if you crank the torsion bars and cut some plastics, so I'd imagine you would be fine.
Not many people have asked questions about using larger wheels specifically, but fitting large tires is a popular question. Try using the search feature instead of the FAQ section.

I appreciate the response guys.
I went today and ordered a wheel/tire combo that hopefully will strike a balance I can live with. I will miss the little amount of missing sidewall, though. With 200,000 miles on my truck, I dare not start stressing the front end parts anymore than normal use. Eventually I'll lift and will have the wheels and just get bigger tires then.
Again, I appreciate it. I will attempt to get pics of the before and the after. I guess whether or not it rubs will determine if I mess with the rake.

On my 04 GMC Sierra I am running the stock factory 20 inch rims. The tire size is 275/55/20 with the factory height. A 60 series will rub on my truck. I do not got a Z71 or a 4x4, but it does have the torsion bar setup. From everything I have rear by cranking on your factory keys and raising the front end will wear out your tieend rods quicker and it will ride rougher. I do not know about teh after market keys. Let me know what you find out.

I ende up going with the 275 55 20 on the advice of the wheel/tire store ...they said it was the closest to my factory overall size. Of course my truck came with little 16" wheels so I'm just tradin some tire for some extra wheel at this point. I will likely wait til I have the money for a quality lift, then try the torsion keys...so if it dont work ...I have another option ...but I WILL need to get back that extra tire ...cause I miss it already and the new ones havent been mounted yet.

i just got a 2 or 3 inch lift for mine from adrenaline motorsports.com for 189 dollars and comes with shocks. i am running 295 nittos and i had them on mine before i put the lift with only three turns to the torsion bars and a very tiny trim on bumper, the lift feels like it actually helped the ride, my buddy has a 05 z71 with thirty fives and with stock torsion keys maxed out, he has had it that way for around 40,000 miles with no problems
