Default transmisson fritzing?

89' 1500 4x4 5.7 ltr V8AUTO Trans 197,000 miles

First post here, did a search, still clueless on my problem.

Problem started on the interstate, I was driving at about 75 mph going up a hill. I was steadily applying gas to keep my speeed at 75 while going up hill. All of a sudden im losing power and the truck starts jerking, kinda lik its slipping in and out of gear. I pull over and check the trans fluid, which is full. I get back on the interstate and drive normally until the next hill, its starts doing the same thing. I baby it to town and the problem disappears for a few days. No trouble codes by the way.

About 3 days laterim driving up hill and it starts jerking/slipping out of gear againbut this time im going about 10-20 mph up hill from a stop. Its an automatic transmission, but when it does this itsequvilant to the feeling of pushing a clutch peddle only part of the way down and trying to accelerate.

over the past few days, my truck isan't even able to shift to 4th (at 40 mph) It gets to about 40 mph then starts jerking.

All of these problems occured while the gear selector was in the "Overdrive" position, the one that looks like a D with a box around it. However, if i have the truck just in normal drive position (D without a box around it) then the problem goes away. The truck dosen't even try to shift to 4th at 40 mph, and everything feels smooth.

Now im pretty clueless but i think the overdrive is my 4th gear and that i have just completly lost the ability to us it. I guess my questionsare whether my obsevation is right? what can i do about it? and how fast should i safely be able to drive with the gear selector in normal "Drive" position?

Thanks for reading and im happy to answer any questions.

Man,I hate to say it...but sounds like the clutch plates are burnt up...I'd begin pricing a trans.

An 89 is all mechanical, and won't set any type of codes

Well..I'm no fan of tranny shops...they usually charge a rebuild for what we (dealers) get for a "Serta" (gm unit)

however...that 89 has a 700r4...pretty basic trans...non-electric..so I'd price both..and compare warranties

Like the guys said,it is tranny time. I don't like Aamco personally as they screwed up a tranny for my jeep, but each shop is different. I would check with a bunch of people that have used local shops to see their experience. GM is the way to go for best warantee though, or you could spend a little more and get a beefed up 700R4 online.

I have a 2001 4x4 and after I have been driving on the highway for over an hour usually over the speed of 60, when i slow down in town after or get stuck in traffic, when i accelerate, my transmission kicks really hard into second gear, i have taken it to a shop and they said nothing was wrong with it. it does not do it all the time, i have checked all of the fluids but still cannot figure out the problem.
