Ive been reading up on the descreening of the MAF lately and I wouldnt do it.

the screen is there to spread out the passing air, rather than restrict it. removing the screen is likely to screw with that.

I had the Bully Dog gas tuner (40510) on my 04 5.3 and loved it. I'll be putting it on my new 08 as soon as I get a chance to update it online. (suppose I could be doing that now rather than posting....)

 

i descreened my MAF and my AFR are still the same. havent had any problems so far. i would suggest the nelson tune.

 

I run 4.56 gears with my 5.3L and 35's. The difference in performance from the stock gearing is night and day. With your motor, it is a must. I'm sure all of us on here who have put 33's or larger tires on our small blocks can tell you that it robs performance, bigtime. The 4.8L is gonna really **** you off with the stock gearing and 33 or better tires. Re-gearing is a tough job. I consider myself mechanically inclined but there is no way I, or you want to do this yourself without experience or a pro watching you. There are lots of problems that can arise if its not done correctly, most notably will be a loud howl coming from your rear differential. There is shimming involved, adjustments to get the mesh pattern correct, etc. Its very involved. 4 Wheel Parts did mine, front and back, for around 1200 total. It was amateur night though, and the installer used cheap $hit "gasket-in-a-tube" when he replaced the diff covers. I found this out when I was towing a trailer from Denver to Houston and i noticed the rear diff puking gear oil during a gas stop. Needless to say I was displeased, at best. Conclusion: get it done, don't do it yourself, and if 4wheel parts does it-tell them to get new ******* OEM gaskets for the install. Douche bags.
