I'm replacingthe water pump on my'00 silverado. The Chilton manual says to apply a thin layer of rtv to both sides of the gasket. I know this is normal with the traditional gaskets, but is it needed with the new gaskets that they use now? The new gasket is some kind of aluminum with rubber inserts so to say. It looks identical to the original and it didn't have any rtv on it. Thanks for any advise.

 

they say to, to get any uneveness to seal plus its around coolant and needs a little more help to seal so i would use it.

 

Don't do it on those type gaskets...they have pockets of pooky already that burst when the bolts tighten
