Default Wheel painting ??

Does anyone have experience painting over chrome wheels. I painted the wheels on my car, but those were polished, not chrome. The car wheels came out well. I have had people ask if they were powdercoated. I am wondering if the smooth, shiny chrome can be sanded and roughed up enough to hold paint.
I want to paint them black and leave the vertical lip on the outside, chrome. I was looking at some wheels on the web. Most of the ones I like are 17" or larger. And were like$1100 and up. I don'tor need to replace tires. Plus that added expense.Below is a link to apic of my car. I want to do the same on my truck.

How do I get a picture in, or attached to, a post?

What kind of rims do you have? I think if I did that to my rims it probably wouldn't look good. Your scuby looks great though!

My truck rims are the stock 8 lug GM wheels. They are still using the same wheels on the 07 HDs.

You could trade with someone who has painted w/t wheels. That would give you rims that are paintable. If I had another set of wheels to put on my truck now I would give mine to my brother in law to have powder coated black except for the outer rim, which I would tape off to leave silver. Then we could just trade. I would like to have chrome wheels on my truck.
Or you can just buy a set of painted wheels off ebay and paint them yourself.
As for painting chrome. DON'T! It will not last no matter how well you prep it.

I don't think you will have to strip the wheels to metal. Wetsand with 600 or 800. Prime them with etching primer. Paint and clearcoat. Use the same brand for the paint. In other words buy enough of the same brand and color to get them done. I think I used 3-4 cans on my Subaru wheels and 2-3 cans of clear.

I used DupliColor wheel paint for the color, NAPA etching primer and clear. I did it about a year ago. They have a few nicks and chips, but it should be pretty easy to touch-up.

The worst part is allowing the painted wheels to cure properly. I waited about a week to put mine back on. While they were off I put on new struts. And the Suby is a third vehicle so I had my old truck to use.
