RE: wont start
Sorry when I saw crank I though that it wasn't cranking, but you were turning the ingnition to start and nothing. Yes you should be able to hear the fuel pump, they are pretty loud on those trucks. Mine went out not too long ago. it's pretty easy to change if you have a floor jack and hopefully not a full tank like I did and a little bit of stubbornessin you!

RE: wont start
well,there are endless [possibilities..
Ecm
Coil
Ign module
bad cap
wiring
fuel pump relay
ign switch
crank sensor
cam sensor
map sensor
throttle sensor
coolant sensor
All of these have at some point caused a "crank-nostart"...But the fuel pump is well more than likely on a vortec
Those mechanics got it made, don't they?

its a crap shoot until you diagnose it WHILE ITS DEAD...the first thing would be to establish what is missing...fuel or spark, then follow that.
This would be done by hooking up a fuel pressure gauge...and a spark tester...then have someone crank it and see what its not getting.

i bought one of those 100 dollar walmart code readers hoping when it croaks on me again i can put that on,,but a buddy of mine just said if the engine light dont come on that code reader is worthless...im thinking maybe fuel pump cause its a lot louder i think than it has been in the past ,,turn the key on and you can hear it ,,i never paid attention before but i can hear it pretty good now cause im listening for it i guess.but it whines for a few seconds now ,,seems longer than it should before it stops ...does that mean anything to you ????? anyways thanks for the advice so far

RE: wont start
yeppers thanks guys ,,,i kinda thought it was the pump all along but i just needed someone to tell me before i start the agonizing pain of changing it .. i heard its a bitch to change... but with the last dealer job i had done im a little bit gun shy to take it back ,,id have to do without 3 months house payments and eat beans and taters for 6 months ,,,so im gonna give it a try myself .even tho last time it costs me 850 bucks to get a miss out of the engine ,,my wife said that i would spend 1150 if id a done it ... the more im around women the more i like my truck ..but anyways thanks again guys and stand by for question number two ,,,hey how do you take a gas tank out ...lol
