Default Auto trans for '96 Cummins

Hey guys, I might be buying a '96 Ram 2500 with the 12 valve cummins in it and everyone tells me they are junk and will break, granted this may be true, but this is my grandfather's truck and I know its never been beat on and never had tranny problems and all service was done at Dodge. My question is this, who knows on any reasonably priced fixes to prevent supposedly inevitable failure? I have heard of beefed up clutch packs and other overhaul it completely. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks.
