I want to know how to change the oil on my 2001 Dodge Ram 2500.

 

I would ask a buddy to come over and help me, if you have never changed oil in a truck before.

To many of us an oil change is a simple operation, but even us old farts have made mistakes. Fortunately, the mistakes I have made changing oil in a vehicle did not cost me a ruined motor.

So many things can go wrong, forget to tighten oil pan drain bolt, oil filter not sealed properly, put in wrong oil, put in too much or not enough oil, etc:

Remember oil is life blood of motor.

If you do not know someone you trust to help you, have the oil changed at a reputable service center. You may find you are $$ ahead in the end.

it's not as bad as you may think, just make sure you get your oil filter at a trustful store. When you get the filter off make sure the old rubber o-ring comes off too or the new filter will not sel properly. Just tighten the oil pan plug snug, it just has to be tight enough to not leak but remember it does not hold the truck together so do not over tighten. if your truck is a diesel make sure to fill the oil filter first this helps build oil pressure qiucker and helps the truck start quicker. just make sure you use 5w30 for a gas engine and 15w40 for a diesel. never start the truck without oil and besure to double check for any oil leaks
