Default 2003 f150/7700 series transmission question

when hauling a 6x10 enclosed trailor, do i need to lock out overdrive? the truck will pull the trailor fine fine on flat highway in od. just to be sure, i locked it out yesterday, but it kills the fuel mileage. the truck is 2003 f150/7700 series with 5.4 it is just a plain jane work truck. i have been told both by different people. some say always lock it out when towing and others say the transmission will downshift when it needs to. any experience with this is appreciated.

I always lock mine out when towing and also when I plowed with it. Mine is an 02 7700 series.
