How much should I spend on this truck?

How much should I spend on this truck?
My company has a 2002 Ford F150 extended cab. 7700 suspension package.
150,000 miles
The truck had been ran without oil, and has a bad knocking sound. The shop gave it back to us and told us that it's on it's last leg, and to BABY it.
I'm sure it's about to blow the engine.
Other than that, the truck's in pretty decent condition. NADA says its worth around 9,000 with a good engine.
When this truck finally does kick the bucket, I'm sure it would be a good investment to buy it and fix it myself. I'm a pretty good mechanic.
How much should I offer them for this truck? I don't want to throw them more money than I have to, but I'm afraid if I lowball them, they'll sell it back to our fleet service for auction.
