Default Ford F250 V10

Hello All,

I am new to this forum and looking at buying a '05 F250 with V10. I have read many forums and posts regarding the durability and reliability of the V10 but have a question. The Ford dealer is offering an extended warranty with this truck and I was wondering if it is really worth it. I know that "peace" of mind typically has a price tag but the warranty that is not exactly bumper to bumper but much more than a power train warranty is about $1900 for a 24 month 24000 mile period. Is this a complete waste of money or should I just bite the bullet and take it? I have thought that I could take the $1900 and put it in the bank as an emergency fund but was wondering if transmissions were problematic or any other item that may obsorb that fund in one visit. I suppose I could go for a bit less of coverage such as engine/power train only for the major items at a bit less of cost (~$1400 or so). The truck has a tad over 80,000 miles on it so any thoughts here? Obviously it all depends on how the truck was maintained during the 80,000 mile period which by the looks of it, it looks really good (not abused at all). Any thoughts here???

Thanks in advance,
Scott

Greetings and welcome Scott:

I don't have any experience with that motor or tranny, so I really can't offer an opinion on that. I guess one point to throw into the equation is how many miles you expect to put on the truck in the next 2 years. If you think you'll exceed the 24,000 miles, it will add almost 8 cents to every mile you drive. If you don't drive the whole 24,000 miles, it will add about $80.00 per month to your operating costs, sitting or running. And I can guarantee you the insurance company is betting that you will not come out ahead with this policy. Is there a deductible? I once paid $700 for a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty with a $50.00 deductible on a new "86 C 20. It worked for me because by the time the policy expired I had like 175,000 miles on the truck. New Radiator, heater core, and head gaskets at $50.00 each. Today's trucks are much more reliable, but also much more expensive when they break. Also, do you do your own wrenching, or take it to a shop when problems occur? I always do my own repairs, but when I had that policy, it went back to the dealer. Either way, good luck with it.

Take care,
Marty

I have a 2001 with the V10. I love it I had some problems with misfiring but I replaced all plugs and coils and havent had a problem since. when it is running right it is a beast of an engine. For me the V10 is well worth it. getting about 18mpg highway 16 mpg in town.
