oil in coolant

oil in coolant
I have a '03 excursion w/ 7.3 diesel
pulled my oil filter housing to add a bypass oil filter (the FS2500 w. stainless lines).
The filter housing also has the oil cooler attached to it, so it had to come out too.
I am pretty sure I labeled the ends correctly, but upon reassembly, I get my coolant tank pumped up w/ engine oil.
If I put the oil cooler tube on backwards, does it pump coolant into the oil and oil into the coolant?....or is the filter housing-to block gasket failing?.......
confused?
