Which brand should I go for... 3500 series diesel, automatic, quad cab, ext bed.
Hey everyone,
I'll be getting my first truck (automobile) in May.
With so many companies marketing smiliar trucks, I had no idea where to research. But then I found this site, and thought I would put it to people who already own trucks (rather than some sponsored review webpage).
It needs to be 3500 series, diesel automatic, kind/quad cab (the biggest size),
long 8' bed, and for the hell of it a 4x4 Dually.
Thanks so much for your time!
Happy New Year!
Cheers,
Kevin

Welcome to the site and hope you post some pics of the new truck.
It sounds like you have no brand loyalty so I'd recommend you go drive them all, several times. The Dodge has the mega so wins with the most interior cabin space.
A dually for the hell of it?
Your could be spending north of $60K on this truck.
Some questions just to start,
-what do you need this for?
-where do you live?
-will it be a new truck?

Hello Diesel Dan, Thanks for the warm welcome.
Missed the bottom half of your post, sorry!
"what do you need it for"
-commuting, going to cottage, towing a trailer of somesort for a festival I
want to attend in august.
"-where do you live?"
I live in Toronto, Canada, and need a 4X4 for winters.
"-will it be a new truck?"
Yes, it will be a new truck.
Thanks and Cheers,
Kevin
P.S. I went to ford's and GMC's website and used the "build" app.
With the addons and such, my ford f350 diesel auto dually ext bed, largest cab was round 55-65.
The Gmc HD 3500 totalled to around 70-75.
The addon on components were different - basically stock vs denali.

Unless you REALLY need the added towing/hauling capacity of a dually I'd recommend a SRW. They work much better in the snow.
My preference would be a Ram mega cab, SRW. Now that they are going to use UREA injection like everyone else the fuel mileage should jump up.

Hey Diesel Dan,
I can't find it anywhere, I was told mpg/fuel economy are not listed for HD 1tons.
Would you happen to know the mpg/fuel economies for the ram 3500 mega cab
in SRW and dually?
Thanks so much!
Cheers mate,
Kevin

However real world figures tend to show that Ram trucks not using DEF(Diesel Exhaust Fluid, aka UREA) return lower MPG than GM/Ford trucks that do use DEF. To clean the DPF(Diesel Particulate Filter, think catalytic converter) Cummins injected extra Diesel fuel to burn off the soot while GM/Ford injected UREA. Many GM/Ford owners only looked at the MPG they were getting and not factoring the cost of UREA into the cost/mile equation.
DRW vs SRW
IMO, the only reason to buy a DRW truck is if you actually need the towing/hauling capacity. DRW trucks ride rougher unloaded, don't handle as well in the snow/mud, will get slightly lower MPG, tire replacement is more costly, almost impossible to rotate the tires and hard to fit through drive thrus.
On any new SRW running DEF I would think you can get 18mpg higway(US gal). I had a 12V and 24V Cummins in 3/4ton 4x4 trim that would get 20 MPG on the highway. I'm not sure when the refreshed Ram is coming out but I'd start shopping all the makers now and test drive them. Do not let a sales person push you into what you don't want. With this price of a vehicle expect high sales pressure.
