Default Charging circuit problem

I have a 2003 Ford F250 Super Duty XLT 4X4, with 5.4 gas engine automatic.I started the truck one morning and while driving down the road the red battery warning light came on. As I drove along the ABS warning light came on. After driving toward a garage 15 miles away the truck shut off. The battery was dead and I had to have the garage tow me in. They put a new alternator on and when they started the truck it did the same thing it was doing when I took it in. The charging rate goes up to over 17 volts. The gauges go up and down eratically. They put on another alternator and same thing happened. I would like to know if anyone has any idea what could be wrong.
