Default HI - need help choosing truck for towing

Hi All - This truck thing is totally new to us, so thought I would come where I new I could get some good advice. I use forums for everything.

We are in the process of buying a new travel trailer. We have to get rid of a van first, because it was at it's towing limit with our last trailer, but have been overwhelmed looking at trucks. We tend to be Ford owners because in our small town, it is the only RELIABLE dealer and we have built a relationship with them. The trailers we have been looking at max out (GVWR) at about 7200# with a dry hitch weight of 650#. We don't want to get a truck that will JUST tow it, incase we do want to upgrade some day. We want to travel the US in about 3 years hopefully so it should be able to tow easily through mountains. (no more groaning engine). We are looking for a used vehicle as we are a little strapped for cash and primarily will be used for towing, though I would like a 4 seater. So I am looking for the best bang for my buck so to speak. If someone out there could advise or give suggestions on the best kind of truck we would need, size engine etc that would be so much appreciated. Looking forward to reading your suggestions.

On the Ford side you could get either an F250 Crew Cab (a diesel will be the best for the job although they will be the most expensive) or an SUV. An Excursion would be a great choice. If your not going to be hauling a lot in the bed an SUV would be my personal choice. The enclosed area is great for extra passengers or gear. We first bought a truck to pull our boat and quickly learned that even a crew cab did not have the seating that we needed. Boats & travel trailers = new passengers wanting to enjoy your toys with you. So we ended up getting an older (1997) big block suburban for $3000 and love it. The mileage isn't as good as a diesel, but our budget would not allow for a diesel, plus I am WAY more familiar with the gas motors so felt better with the strongest gas burner I could find. Actually the Vortec 454's are not that bad considering the power they provide. My Ford buddy has an Excursion with the 5.4 liter and is happy with the way it tows his 20' trailer, but it doesn't have the power of our 454 Suburban. Good luck and let us know what you find.

Thank you for your advice. It is most appreciated! We sold the van today, so are ready to proceed. Between trying to choose the right travel trailer and trying to figure out this truck/suv thing, we are going nuts Any other opinions are welcome.
