I hope you know that any answers you get will be skewed by opinion rather than actual fact!

I will tell you right now that a 05 06 Duramax is the best... Produces the most power, torque and fuel efficiency. Those years were when the duramax was at its best before the stupid fuel changes in the 07+ ones.

I would say it is between the Cummins and the Duramax. The Cummins has had a great reputation for many many years. The transmissions seem to be a little suspect though. The Duramax with the Allison seems to be a great package in those years (04-06) and would be the truck I would personally buy. The Ford Diesel of that era has a really bad reputation (sorry Ford guys). The old 7.3 Ford diesel has to be ranked in the top diesels of all time, but when Ford went to the 6.0 it went to the crapper. I may be slightly biased being a Chevy guy, but I will admit that the early Chevy diesels or should I say gas motor conversions were HORRIBLE and I wouldn't own one. When they first came out with the Duramax it had injector issues which has been resolved. The Allison trans. speaks for itself and is near bulletproof! I am in the business and judging by the resale value I stand behind my initial statement of choosing the Cummins or Duramax. Just my 2 cents!

The truckforums here tend to be a GM-dominated group, so do your homework, don't simply go with our opinions.
I personally am a fan of the 07-present Duramax/Allisons Its much quiter than any other diesel and it don't blow as noxious of an exhaust. Its really quite quick too.
The loudness of the truck is one of the biggest reasons I like the new models.
The Fords are unbeleivably loud, however, but they pull like you wouldn't believe.

Thumbs up which is the best truck?

I also think you can go with Duramax. I am suggesting you from personal experience.
