Im in the market for a new truck. I own a excavating company, Im looking for a truck that can haul a mid size excavator. Ive been looking at the dodges 3500 or the ford 350's. I do drive a chevy now and not realy impressed with it. Any suggestiong on the best truck to get would be great

 

what is the weight of the excavator? you may get away from the one ton 3500/F350 class and move up to a 4500/5500 or F450/F550. i like the dodge with the cummins engine personally. i use a Ram5500 to tow my tack loader. there is a 26,100 lb limit with the ram and a 75mph limiter which sucks if you live in NM where the speed limit with a trailer is 75.

 

I believe that it weighs around 15000 pounds I have found a nice dodge 3500 with the cummins is there a big difference between say 3/4 ton and 1 ton besides more springs?

 

gumbybm, there are a lot of guys that tow oversize loads, have little or no concern for the safety of others or the laws.
i follow the rules. the rules state on the plate on the door post what the gross vehicle combined weight capacity of the vehicle is. i would certainly not tow a heavy trailer without dullies.

once again drivers will repeatedly boast of the loads that they haul or tow. it's up to you.

federal says 26,100lbs total weight of vehicle,cargo, + towed trailer. They also go by load carrying capacity of tires.

the trailer sales man will tell you just about anything to sell the trailer don't believe what they tell you; talk to the DMV or DOT to find out the limits in your area. contact chrysler/dodge to find out your towing limits.

i do not know without checking it out what the towing capacities are.
